Blood Clots and Blood Thinners

by Dr. Scott Rubinstein  August 25, 2007

Hi All,

Here we are debating a question that has no clear cut answer. All the anticoagulents have side effects. Bleeding and bruising are the most common ones. There are advantages and disadvantages to each and none is the clear cut winner. As far as effectiveness they all seem to be about the same. Each surgeon has their opinions and all can be supported by some data.

My advice is to go with whatever your surgeon is comfortable with. If you are unsure ask questions such as why they choose a certain drug protocol. And if you feel strongly about one discuss it with your surgeon. They should be able to justify their choice.
