Dave Veres, a 40 year old former closer, has been out of the baseball scene for two years. He recently had a lot to celebrate when he passed his first test in his mission to become the first Major League pitcher to play baseball with an artificial hip.
It has been one year since Veres received the prosthetic hip and when he was on the field, he did not favor his left hip, he fielded a bunt cleanly and covered the first base without any errors two times in an inning. This was all done during an intrasquad game of the Colorado Rockies.
People might remember that in the early 1990s, Bo Jackson also played with an artificial hip when he tried to make a comeback from a football injury. However the comeback was unsuccessful.
In 1998-99, Veres was Colorado Rockies closer and he played his last Major League game on October 15, 2003 when he was with Chicago and this was for the NL championship series against Florida.
In 2004, Veres spent the entire year recovering from a surgery on his right shoulder. However, it was his hip that had been troubling him for 4 years that forced him to retire. He finished his Major League career with 36-35, and averaged 3.44 ERA with 95 saves. He played 10 major league season with Houston, Montreal, Colorado, St Louis and the Cubs.
Veres said that he opted for the surgery so that he could chase his three children around the house and when he recovered he spent time playing the city league baseball in Castle Rock, Colorado. It was then he got in touch with the Rockies, who asked him to the camp on a minor league contract.
