Hello Everybody,

Just an update with good news. I saw Dr. Greidanus for my 2 month follow up. He declared that I now have no restrictions allowing for a return to cross trainers, stairmasters, bicycles, and even tennis. I was referred for physio for "aggressive" treatment. I had related in an earlier post the following: I had a resurface with Dr. Antoniou in Montreal on Jan. of 2005. It was the ASR by Depuy of Johnson and Johnson.

For 18 months my hip was great, but beginning in Sept. 06 pain came quite suddenly and became worse for months. I was misdiagnosed first with bursitis, then with heterotrophic soft tissue ossification , and finally a minor infection for the pain. After that long distance of time from Jan. 05, both my GP and Dr. Antoniou did not think that it was a deep infection. I was mistreated with anti-inflammatories, physio, and oral antibiotics until Dec. 06 when the incision "burst" open with a bloody discharge. This occurred in the last couple of days in Cabo San Lucas after a 2 week on crutches "holiday". I believed that I was going to be recuperating while on holidays in Mexico but it got worse.

When I returned to Vancouver and finally saw Dr. Greidanus I was sent for an aspiration because he was sure that I did have the deep infection and I did. I had that ASR removed and replaced with a temporary prosthesis in Feb 07. I was on antibiotics intravenously for 6 weeks and when the infection was eradicated my THR revision was done on May 14/07.

One doctor at VGH said that I could have been afflicted with a low grade infection for that time from 2005 but how I got the infection is a mystery. Perhaps an infected toe in Sept. 06 allowed bacteria into the blood stream to gravitate to that "foreign object" in my hip.

Dr. Greidanus warned me to be careful about causing any wounds that could become infected and to consult with my Dentist re antibiotics before dental work. A Dental hygienist friend has stated that the mouth is the greatest conduit for unwanted bacteria to enter the blood stream.

I was pain free 2 days after my surgery and did not continue with any pain meds except for Tylenol for only 4 days after surgery. I am now very happy with the outcome.

I received more info a couple of days ago with Dr. Greidanus. There is not published literature yet about my new THR MOM. I was the first person in Western Canada to receive it. It is by Depuy of Johnson and Johnson, the same who had done my ASR resurface prosthesis. This has a Summit femoral stem, a Pinnacle acetabulum, and a 44mm metal head metal on metal.

Dr. Greidanus has done many resurfacings and agreed that he would do my left hip with an ASR if I wanted next year but did not see a reason why I should not have the THR MOM. He has stated that he feels that it will last 25 years. He stated that (heaven forbid) if another revision was needed on that same right hip that he could easily "pop" out the THR. The femoral stem is different than the typical THRs. I have yet to Google the Depuy site to learn more. I still read this site regularly but I also participate on the other site for THRs. How can I send this post to that site? Thanks for any assistance.

Regards, Ted Wilson
