TriboFit® Hip System: Advanced New Design and Bearing
Material
for Total Hip Replacement Active Implants Corp. (AIC)
features a new, potentially revolutionary, hip replacement
device called TriboFit® Hip System. The system is different from
all the other ones because, in addition to standard acetabular
cup and femoral head, the device features a proprietary TriboFit®
Acetabular Buffer™, made of a gelatinous-like hydrophilic
substance that is supposed to imitate the fluid film layer
naturally present in joints. Some clinicians who already used
the device reported that potential advantages of the system
include "minimal reaming and a press-fit surgical technique.
Furthermore, by ensuring that microelastohydrodynamic
lubrication is maintained, friction can be nearly eliminated,
thus decreasing the potential for wear."
The device received the European CE Mark in
September 2006. The company hopes to gain FDA clearance in the
US soon.

JRI in Distribution Agreement with Active Implants Corporation
Joint Replacement Instrumentation Limited (JRI) is excited to
announce that it has signed an exclusive agreement to distribute
the TriboFit® Hip System, an innovative compliant bearing hip
system developed and marketed by Active Implants
Corporation(AIC), based in Memphis, TN, USA.
In clinical use for two years and CE marked, TriboFit® employs
advanced pliable structured materials offering significant
advantages over current options available for total hip
replacement. Unlike current implant systems, which use hard
materials, TriboFit® uses a soft compliant bearing polymer
having hydrophilic properties to encourage enhanced lubrication.
Establishing this improved fluid film lubrication with a soft
bearing surface restores more closely the normal biomechanical
properties of the hip. The micro-elastohydrodynamic lubrication
between the TriboFit® Buffer and the matched femoral head
reduces friction and improves wear with superior tribological
properties.
As a result of the low wear characteristics the TriboFit® Buffer
maintains a constant thickness which permits maximum femoral
head sizes to be used up to 50mm. This allows for the best
possible range of motion, minimizing the risk of impingement and
dislocation whilst creating the best environment for fluid film
lubrication. Its modulus of elasticity, similar to normal
cartilage, restores shock absorbing benefits for the first time
for the reconstructed hip joint. Brian Jones, Managing Director
of JRI, states: “We are very pleased to be able to offer our
customers this exciting new earing option. This bearing
combined with the Furlong® Total Hip will provide
nparalleled implant longevity which is a real benefit for the
every younger patient needing a new hip”.
Stephen Bradshaw, President/CEO of AIC, equally pleased, said:
“Having a well established company like JRI introduce our
innovative technology in the UK ombines the reliability of
the Furlong® Hip with leading edge compliant bearing
echnology for superior fluid film lubrication. We look forward
to seeing the positive reaction of the orthopaedic community to
this product”.
JRI and AIC are launching post approval studies in the UK prior
to a full commercial release targeted in 2009. If you are
